Ways of Controlling Exposure (7) Flashcards
Three basic ways of controlling exposure to harmful radiation
- Time
- Distance
- Shielding
Controlling Exposure - Time
Less time you spend near a radiation source the less radiation you are exposed to.
Controlling Exposure - Distance
The farther you stand from the radiation source, the less radiation you are exposed to.
Controlling Exposure - Shielding
Any shielding between you and the source of radiation, reduces your exposure.
What is a Collimator?
Made of tungsten or lead used to partially surround the source to absorb radiation not being directed to an object being radiographed.
- Most practical use of shielding for radiography
Define Half-Value-Layer
thickness of a shielding material required to reduce the original radiation intensity to 1/2 the original
Define Tenth-Value-Layer
Thickness of a shielding material required to reduce the original radiation intensity to 1/10 the original
Shielding Materials
- Depleted Uranium
- Concrete blocks
- Lead sheets
