Cells and Tissue (5) Flashcards
What are Cells?
Basic building blocks of all living things
What is the Nucleus?
The Cell’s command centre, gives directions, to grow, mature, divide or die.
Houses the DNA and Proteins
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid (hereditary material in nearly all living things) - shaped = Double Helix
What are proteins? and what do they do?
Proteins are wrapped by DNA to form a chromosome
White Cells (formed by tissues)
- Scar tissue formation
- Promote antibodies
White Blood Cells
(Leucocytes)
Formed by bone marrow, combat bacterial infections
- lack of wbc = Leukopenia
- too many wbc = Leukemia
Basal Cells
Produce complex cells (bone marrow, cornea, skin etc.)
Alveolar Cells
Located in lungs, absorb oxygen and release CO2
Bile Duct Cells
Associated with digestion
Cells of the tubules of the kidneys
produces hormones that control body functions (regulate blood pressure, producing, minerals and fluid, produce red blood cells)
Endothelial Cells
Line the heart and blood vessels
Connective Tissues include:
Muscles, Tendons, ligaments
Red Blood Cells
(Erythrocytes)
- Contain hemoglobin that carries oxygen and collects CO2
- Decrease in hemoglobin causes Anemia
Platlets
(Thrombocytes)
- for blood clotting
Fraction for Red to White Cells
1/600
red/white
