Radiation Factors impacting Biological Harm (5) Flashcards
Alpha particles effect compared to Gamma Radiation
Alpha will deposit all of its energy into a small volume of tissue, Gamma will spread its energy over a large volume of tissue
Alpha Particles compared to Beta Particles
Alpha Particles are 7,000x bigger than Beta Particles and move slower causing more damage
Percent of Body Exposed
A whole body dose is worse than a restricted dose
Size of received dose
the higher the dose in one exposure = larger the damage
Rate of received dose
One exposure time dose will cause more damage than the same dose over a period of time
Age of person
Younger you are the more impact radiation will have because children are growing which means more cell division is occurring
Biological differences
Some people are more affected by radiation than others. No studies have been able to determine why.
