Reactors (2) Flashcards
Chain Reaction
When Nuclear Fission occurs energy (neutrons about 2-3) are released, this continues until most of the radiation is used up.
Moderator
Used to slow the Chain Reaction from the release of 20,000km/s to 3km/s
Thermal Neutrons
Slow moving particles created by the use of a Moderator during a Chain Reaction
Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR)
- American made
- uses enriched uranium (2-4% U-235) and water as a Moderator
Depleted
Element left over after Nuclear Fission with a Moderator. The left over element is less concentrated than what is found in nature.
- Depleted Uranium
- Used as “shielding” material in exposure devices
Canadian Made Reactors (CANDU)
Use of a more expensive Moderator; Heavy Water D2O (deuterium and an Isotope of hydrogen with 1 p, 1 n, 1 e) which has a low absorption rate for neutrons.
