Exposure Device Transport (8) Flashcards
Transport Class for Radioactive Materials Under Transport Canada is…
Class 7, dangerous goods
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Clear Language Regulations (TDG Regulations)
What agencies provide transport regulations and standards for nuclear substances?
- Transport Canada
- CNSC (Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances (PTNS))
What requirements for personnel exist for the transportation of Nuclear substances?
- Possess a current TDG Certificate of training (3 year renewal).
- work under the supervision of someone who is TDG certified or be TDG certified.
Three responsibilities involved in the transport of a radioactive material
- Consignor
- Carrier
- Consignee
Consignor
Person, organization or government that prepares a consignment for transport
(sender)
- comply with PTNS regulations
Carrier
Person, organization or government undertaking the carriage of consignment
(road, rail, air, water - delivery man)
- comply with national and international transport regulations
- TDG certification
- safety equipment, placarding, transport documentation and driver training
Consignee
Person, organization or government that receives a consignment. (purchaser)
- no one other than the consignor or consignee can open the package.
What are Approval Certificates?
A document issues by the competent authority stating that the sealed source/package meets applicable requirements (PTNS)
What is a Competent Authority?
Any national or international regulatory body or authority designated to act on behalf of a country in all maters related to the transport of radioactive material (CNSC approved)
Radioactive material classes
Manufacturer must identify the class (hazard category) for the substance.
- Class 7 - specific activity >70KBq/kg
What is a Special Form Radioactive Material?
Radioactive material that presents minimal contamination hazards.
- Iridium-192
- Selenium-75
Types of Radioactive Packages
11 Types exist but the most common are: Type A and Type B(U)
- according to the maximum activity that the material can carry
What is a Type A Package?
Radioactive materials activity is less than:
- 1,000GBq Iridium-192, special form
- 600GBq Iridium-192
- 400GBq Cobalt-60 (either form)
- 300GBq Selenium-74 (either form)
What is a Type B(U) Package?
When the materials activity exceeds Type A values.
How are radioactive material containers labelled?
- Identification mark issued for design of container
- Container serial number
- Type (A or B(U))
- Weight of container (if >50kg)
- RADIOACTIVE
- Trefoil symbol
- Name, address, telephone number of licensee
- Name, form, quantity (Bq), date of quantity measurement, maximum permissible activity
How are radioactive materials being transported labelled and packaged?
Consignor must:
- prepare and close (following instructions)
- mark and label
- fill out shipping documentation and sign declaration
- collect pertinent documentation for package (Special form certificate, package design certificate)
- provide valid leak test
- confirm carrier and driver have class 7 certification
- provide carrier with shipping documentation, competent authority certificates, instructions for loading stowage carriage handling unloading and emergency arrangements, four class 7 placards
- inform consignee of shipment
- keep shipping records
What are shipping names?
Identify the nature and characteristics of the material being shipped.
i.e.
Radioactive Material, Type A Package, Special Form Non-Fissile or Fissile-Excepted
What are UN Numbers?
For easy identification
i.e.
3332 or 2916
What is a Transport Index?
Provides control over radiation exposure to transport workers and member of the public + stowage information for carrier.
- Measure maximum radiation level (mSv/h) 1m from exposure device
- multiply by 100
- round to first decimal
i. e.
0. 1
What is the Category of Package?
Radiation level on surface of package and transport index
i. e.
- I-WHITE (<5uSv/h, <0.05ti)
- II-YELLOW (>5uSv/h to 500uSv/h, 0 to 1ti)
- III-YELLOW (>500uSv/h to 2mSv/h, >1 to 10ti)
Category I-WHITE
<5uSv/h, <0.05ti
Category II-YELLOW
> 5uSv/h to 500uSv/h, 0 to 1ti
Category III-YELLOW
> 500uSv/h to 2mSv/h, >1 to 10ti
What are Placards?
A vehicle transporting a category III-YELOW must display four class 7 placards on each side of the vehicle (supplied by consignor)
