Radiation Effects Summarized (5) Flashcards
Somatic Effects
Effects Experienced by the exposed individual other than the reproductive cells.
Genetic Effects
Effects Inherited caused by mutation in sperm or eggs.
Acute Exposure
Exposure to a large dose of radiation in a short time period
Chronic Exposure
Irradiation spread over a long period of time at lower intensity levels
- delayed effects
- stochastic or non-stochastic effects
Short term/Prompt Somatic Effects
Effects evident over a short time after Acute Exposure (Hours, Days, Weeks)
- Somatic
- Acute
- Prompt
- Non-stochastic effects i.e. Erythema (skin reddening)
Long term/Delayed Effects
Effects caused by radiation that aren’t evident until years, decades or generations after exposure.
Stochastic Effects
delayed effects =
- Cancer
- Leukemia
- Tumors
- Mutations
- premature aging
chronic exposure =
- genetic mutations in sperm or egg cells
Non-Stochastic Effects
delayed effects = cataracts
prompt effects = Erythema
Erytherma
Skin reddening
- skin and tissue burns
- radiation sickness
- fever
- disorientation
- death
