Waldenstroms Macroglobulinaemia Flashcards
1
Q
What is waldenstrom’s macroglobulinaemia?
A
- lymphoplasmacytoid malignancy
- monoclonal IgM paraprotein expansion
2
Q
What patient group usually presents with Waldenstroms Macroglobulinaemia
A
Older Men
3
Q
Clinical features of Waldenstroms
A
- systemic upset: weight loss, lethargy
- hyperviscosity syndrome e.g. visual disturbance
- hepatosplenomegaly
- lymphadenopathy
- cryoglobulinaemia e.g. Raynaud’s
4
Q
Why is hyperviscosity a problem in Waldenstroms?
A
IgM forms pentamer which increases viscosity
5
Q
Investigations used to diagnose WM?
A
- look for monoclonal IgM paraproteinaemia
- bone marrow biopsy
= lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma cells
6
Q
Management of Waldenstroms
A
rituximab-based combination chemotherapy
