Tumour Lysis Syndrome (TLS) Flashcards
1
Q
What can trigger Tumour Lysis syndrome (TLS)?
A
- introduction of combination chemotherapy
- OR can occur with steroid treatment alone.
2
Q
What medications can be given prophylactically to avoid TLS
A
Allopurinol
Rasburicase
3
Q
How does rasburicase work
A
metabolizes uric acid to allantoin
Allantoin = more water-soluble than uric acid
=> more easily excreted by the kidneys
4
Q
Rasburicase and allopurinol should not be given together in the management of tumour lysis syndrome. TRUE/FALSE?
A
TRUE
- as this reduces the effect of rasburicase
5
Q
What causes TLS
A
breakdown of the tumour cells and release of chemicals from the cell
6
Q
What happens biochemically in TLS
A
=> high K+, PO4 and uric acid
=> low Ca2+
