Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in DIC
A
widespread clotting with resultant bleeding
2
Q
What triggers DIC?
A
Tissue Factor (TF) release in exposure to
cytokines, tumour necrosis factor, and endotoxin
=> promotes clotting cascade
TF is also abundant in tissues of the lungs, brain, and placenta.
3
Q
Causes of DIC
A
sepsis
trauma
obstetric complications e.g. amniotic fluid embolism or HELLP syndrome
malignancy
4
Q
Typical blood picture in DIC
A
Prolonged PT & APTT
LOW fibrinogen
LOW platelets
↑ fibrinogen degradation products (d-dimer)
