SPS
sodium polyanethol sultanate used in blood culture vials -collect max volume of blood so SPS does not become toxic
what tube can you collect blood culture on
yellow SPS tube- first then transfer to vials asap – not reccomended though ratio of anticoagulant to blood increases and transferring blood can increase chance of contamination
syringe can also be used -transfer immediately
bacT/ALERT system and vial information
common blood culture instrument
blood drawn into vial of culture medium -incubated- examined for presence of microqogransims if there are them there will be CO2. -increase in CO2 changes colour of sensor in bottom of bottle -eye can see
bacT/ALERT adults
older than 14 aerobic- green min 5ml max 10ml anaerobic bottle-orange min 5ml max 10ml
paediatric patients and bacT/ALERT
weight dependant as well-check aerobic bottle-ped. Plus Yellow min 1.5ml max 4ml anaerobic-orange not done on neonates min1.5 max 4ml
