unlabelled specimen
if its easy to recollect always dispose of and recollect them
invasive ones like csf you can’t
mislabelled specimen
if it is something as simple as a spelling error call ward
REJECT IF TRANSFUSION
reject if mislabelled with someone elses label

check whats in to determine

short draws mean incorrect blood to additive ratio check department and recollect if you can
hemolyzed specimen
appear red due to hemoglobin from damaged rbc
rejected if testing for potassium
some tests may still be performed ask mlt
lipemic specimen
contain lipoprotein particles
and chylomicrons which are fat particles
sometimes ultracentrifuge used to get rid of fat particles
icteric blood specimen
high levels of bilirubin
dark yellow green to bright yellow
can still be used but mlt must look it over
chilled specimen specimen
only do for two hours, only do if necessary
spin centrifuge at 4 degrees and aliquot then refrigerate
light sensitive specimen
use for or amber microtainer
bilirubin can deteriorate top to 50% after one hour exposure to light
frozen specimen
once thawed refrigerate or room temp mix well before aliquoting d
rejection follow up
if test is not suitable for labs rejection criteria then they must notify ward or physician that test is cancelled and why, enter comment in LIS of why
do not discard sample
