also known as lis -maintains patient information and specimen testing data usually integrated with his (hospital information system)
can also be linked to physician operating systems
-when patient test request entered into lis the lis assigns it an accession number
once the specimen arrives in lab the specimen is entered into lis
– the date time and initial of when specimen was collected
– the date time and initial of when specimen was receive into lis

unique number and is attached to each specimen in requisition to keep track of and organize specimens, different accession numbers are given to the same patients if an additional requisition is made

outpatients blood collected as soon as possible
*common technique is when requisitions are grouped together to say a specific area and one phlebotomist will go and collect these specimens
