Insulin
Short acting human drug
Slow onset
30 mins before meal
usually SC, IV in hyperglycemjc emergencies
Note: cant give orally!
Lispro
Insulin analogue
ROSA
SC, IV (mostly SC)
15 mins before meal
Note: neutral pH
Aspart
Insulin analogue
ROSA
SC, IV (mostly SC)
15 mins before meal
Note: neutral pH
Glulisine
Insulin analogue
ROSA
SC, IV (mostly SC)
15 mins before meal
Note: neutral pH
Afrezza
Inhaled insulin
More ROSA than insulin analogues
Note: can cause cough and throat irritation
Decreases lung function over time!!
NPH
Insulin + zinc and PROTAMINE
Note: only SC!
Glargine
Long acting insulin
24 hrs
pH 4.0 (cant be used in combination with insulin analogues)
Detemir
Long acting insulin
24 hrs
Has fatty acid chain in it that can bind to albumin (thus prolonging half life)
Degludec
Longest acting insulin
42 hrs
Has hexadecanoic acid part that forms multihexamer (probably slows down digestion of the drug)
Neutral pH (can be used with insulin analogues!)
Lipodystrophy
Caused by hypoglycemia (<70 mg/ dL)
Which Glut is insulin sensitive?
Glut 4
Which characteristic of insulin drugs lower hypoglycemic risk?
Shorter peak effect
