Francis Cabot Lowell
Who- Inventor, Businessmen
What- Examined textile mill machinery in England and developed a far more powerful textile loom. He then created a company based on his machine, called the Boston Manufacturing Company.

Why- His invention and company shaped early manufacturing in America and its workforce.
Seminole War
Who- Andrew Jackson, Seminole Natives
What- The war fought to remove the Seminole tribe from Florida and relocate them to present-day Oklahoma.
Where- Florida, USA
When- 1817-1818
Why- This war was fought because the Seminole would often raid places in Georgia. The US also wanted to use that land for more white settlements so they needed to move them.
Adams-Onis Treaty
Who- John Quincy Adams, Luis de Onis
What- It gave Florida and the Oregon Territory that Spain had a claim on to the US. In return, the US gave the Spanish Texas which would connect to their control in Mexico.
Where- USA

Why- It established a border between US and Spanish territory in the Americas which was important because claims to these territories were often being fought over.
Missouri Compromise
Who- Henry Clay, James Monroe
What- It prohibited slavery in any states above the Missouri line.
Where- USA
When- 1820
Why- It banned slavery in any new states above that longitude line to hopefully maintain an equal balance between slave and nono-slave states.

What- Different parts of the country identify more with what part of the country they are from instead of being from the US as a whole.
Where- USA
When- 1819
Why- Because of different ways of life and not relating to people that lived in the other parts of the country. This created many clashes between the different parts of the country.
Tallmadge Amendment
Who- James Tallmadge Jr.
What- There was a debate in Congress about whether Missouri should be a slave or non-slave state. It wanted to ban the introduction of more slaves into Missouri and to gradually free the enslaved people in Missouri once they reached the age of 25.

Why- It was one of the first major legislative battles over slavery.
Gibbons vs Ogden
Who- Thomas Gibbons, Aron Ogden, John Marshall
What- New York granted a monopoly to Gibbons in interstate waters. Ogden said that wasn’t allowed and that only the federal give it. could grant that.
Where- New York, New Jersey
When- 1824
Why- It showed that the federal gov has a say over the state gov in the end.
McCulloch vs Maryland
Who- The state of Maryland, The federal Gov.
What- The state of Maryland was trying to tax The Second National Bank located in Maryland. The guy at the bank refused to pay the taxes so the state of Maryland sued him.
Where- USA
When- 1819
Why- This case was an example of federal vs state power and in the end federal won. This case ruled in favor of federal law and said that states could not tax federal institutions. It also established implied powers to the different branches of gov. like Congress.
Worcester vs Georgia
Who- Cherokee Nation, State of Georgi, Supreme Court
What- The state gov wanted to have a say over the Cherokee Nation’s land whereas the Cherokee Nation was its own sovereign community. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee Nation because it said only the federal gov. could deal with Native American relations, not the states.

Why- This case dealt with State Rights over Federal Power, and the Indigenous people living in the US.
Monroe Doctrine
Who- James Monroe, John Quincy Adams
What- Told European nations not to try and claim or reclaim colonies in the Americas because the US would see it as an attack on them and intervene with any nation being attacked.

When- Dec 2, 1823
Why- The Monroe Doctrine was important because it was based on the fear the European nations would want to reclaim their colonies and this made it so they wouldn’t want to do that because it could start a war.
American System
Who- Henry Clay
What- Established the Second National Bank. Protected high tariffs. Its goal was to unite the country economically

Why- The US needed to strengthen its economy and thought that encouraging high tariffs would promote domestic growth and that the national bank, which would have a stable currency, could do that.

What- Participated in the corrupt bargain and ran for president 4 times. He promoted the American System.

Why- He greatly influenced the country in times of political turmoil.
John Quincy Adams
Who- Secretary of State, President
What- He had many problems when he was president including people’s bitterness from the “corrupt bargain”, diplomatic problems, fought with the state of Georgia over Cherokee rights, and supporting new tariffs.
Where- USA
When- July 11, 1767 - February 23, 1848
Why- he was president during a difficult time for the country. Where states vs the Federal gov was a huge issue because the states thought they had more power than they actually did. (Ex; Cherokee Natives and the state of Georgia.)
