Cult of Honor
Who- White men in the South
What- White men in the South had this strong idea of defending their honor so if someone insulted them they had to retaliate and attack that person in some way because that person had attacked their honor.
Where- USA
When- 19th century
Why- The idea of honor was huge because of the slavery system they had established. They needed to have respect for other people and needed people to respect them so having honor played into that.
Paternalism
Who- Men that were the head of the house
What- The system that parents set up where each family member would have a certain role and rules to follow.
Where- USA

Why- During this time when the North was attacking the system of slavery it was easy to convince people that they would also attack another system, paternalism.
Gang System
Who- Slaves on tobacco, cotton, and sugar plantations
What- When slaves would be forced to work as long as the person overseeing them saw fit.
Where- Southern USA plantations
When- 19th century
Why- Those types of plantations required a lot more work which meant they needed a different system to run those plantations in comparison to the task system.
Slave Codes
Who- Enslaved people
What- Slave codes were laws that defined the status of an enslaved person. They didn’t let slaves possess property, leave their master’s premises without permission, or be out after dark. There was also no legal recognition if enslaved people got married. Slave codes basically stripped enslaved people of most human rights.
Where- USA
When- 19th century
Why- Enslaved people played a huge impact on the economy as well as people were just incredibly racist and felt that people of color shouldn’t be treated as human. Slave codes justified the awful treatment of slaves.
Task System
Who- Enslaved people on rice plantations
What- The system where a slave would be assigned a task and once that task was completed they would be free for the day.
Where- USA
When- 19th century
Why- There was this idea that the task system gave enslaved people more autonomy which meant they were less likely to revolt as well as they didn’t have to watch over the enslaved people doing their work like they did in the gang system.
Denmark Vesey
Who- Free African American
What- Organized a revolt in Charleston with 9,000 followers but was quickly squashed.
Where- Charleston, South Carolina
When- 1822
Why- He was against slavery and his revolt was a way to try and get rid of it.
Gabriel Prosser
Who- Enslaved African American
What- Gathered rebellious slaves, 1,000 of them. He gathered them outside of Richmond but then the rebellion got squashed.
Where- Richmond Virginia
When- 1800
Why- To try and overthrow slavery.
Nat Turner
Who- Enslaved person preacher
What- Led a band of African Americans who were armed with guns and axes. They went from house to house and killed many men, women, and children. The people who participated in this were later executed.
Where- South County, Virginia
When- 1831
Why- His rebellion scared many people because the people in this rebellion armed themselves and attacked people who had done them harm.
Pidgin
Who- African Americans
What- The language that African Americans spoke when they first were brought to America. It contained some words from African languages but mainly English with a dialect.
Where- USA
When- 19th century
Why- When the early African Americans were brought over, they all spoke very different languages, but as time went on, this was how they communicated.
Slave Music
Who- Enslaved African Americans
What- The songs enslaved African Americans would sing while working to unite themselves or during religious ceremonies.
Where- USA
When- 19th century
Why- Their music was a huge part of their society and united them. It gave them hope and made religion strong within African American culture.
