VO2 max Flashcards
What is VO2 max
VO2 max is maximum volume of 02 that can be taken in and consumed by body in 1min.
What is volume of 02 measured in in VO2 max
Volume of 02 is measured in ml/kg/min
What is zone of VO2 max
Zone of VO2 max is when we have reached max volume of 02 we are capable of consuming.
What is aerobic capacity
Aerobic capacity is ability of body to inspire, transport and utilise 02 to perform sustained periods of aerobic activity.
What factors affect VO2 max
Factors that affect VO2 max are age Gender Genetics Smoking Physiological make up Training
How does physiology affect VO2 max and how
Physiology affects VO2 max by muscle fibre types (higher VO2 max more type 1), capillary density (better at exchanging 02), mitochondria (more/larger means we are better at performing aerobically), alveolar surface area (more gaseous exchange taking 02 in blood), haemoglobin. Improves capacity to take in and transport 02.
How does training affect VO2 max
Training affects VO2 max by
Aerobic training can improve VO2 max by 10-20%.
Training e.g continuous/fartlek produces adaptations such as increased strength of respiratory muscles, cardiac hypertrophy, increased mitochondria. Improves capacity to take in, transport and utilise 02
How does age affect VO2 max
VO2 max reduces with age due to reduction in tissue elasticity
How does gender affect VO2 max
Gender affects VO2 max because male VO2 max tends to be higher, female is lower VO2 max. Males have better 02 transportation capacities (higher stroke volume and blood plasma).
Why MIT athletes e.g rugby benefit from VO2 max
Maximal intermittent exercise need aerobic capacity because the better aerobic fitness, the quicker they will recover from bursts of high intensity exercise.
Evaluate importance of VO2 max
VO2 max is important because it allows performers to last duration of game.
Delays OBLA,
Allows teams to play at higher tempo/intensity
Allows players to recover better after anaerobic work
