Aerobic Fitness Tests Flashcards
How to carry out multistage fitness test
Subject performs continuous 20m shuttle run at progressive intensities until exhaustion
Each 20m shuttle is timed to audio cue
Test is over when subject cannot continue shuttle in allotted time.
A level and shuttle number predicts VO2 max from normative tables.
Adv of multistage fitness test
Adv
Can compare to standardised tables
Simple to set up
Large groups tested simultaneously
Dis adv of multistage fitness test
Dis adv
Only Prediction
Maximal test
Only for runners
How to carry out Direct gas analysis
Subject performs continuous exercise at progressive intensities to exhaustion. Expired air is captured by a mask and relative concentrations of 02 and CO2 in expired and inspired air are measured to accurately calculate VO2 max
Adv of direct gas analysis
Adv
Objective Measurement
Valid, reliable
Run,cycle,swim- adaptable across various equipment cycle ergometer, treadmill
Dis adv of gas analysis test
Dis adv Expensive Impractical 1 person at a time Maximal test
How to carry out Physical work capacity 170 test
To carry out PWC170,
Athlete uses cycle ergometer, (can measure wattage)
Increase workload until heart rate reaches 115bpm, then up workload until Hr reaches about 130bpm then to about 145bpm.
Adv of PWC170
Adv
Submaximal
Valid
Dis adv of PWC170
Dis adv
Benefits Cyclists
Assumes Linear relationship between Hr and workload
Only a prediction
What is protocol for Cooper 12 min run
Protocol for 12 min Cooper run is
Subject performs continuous running achieve a max distance within 12 runs. Maximal intensity test and total distance is used to calculate VO2 max.
