Q

What are anabolic steroids and why are they useful

A

Anabolic steroids are a form of testosterone.
Anabolic steroids increase protein synthesis and therefore more muscle growth. Less fat in muscle tissue
increasing frequency, intensity and duration of training.
Reduce recovery time

Q

What is erythropoietin and RhEPO and how do they work

A

EPO is the hormone in charge of reduction of RBCs and RhEPO is the synthetic EPO. Used to boost endurance by stimulating red blood cell (erythrocyte) production to increase body’s oxygen carrying capacity.

Q

How is blood doping carried out

A
Blood doping is carried out by:
Remove blood
Separate RBCs
Store them frozen
Retransmission in saline solution (form of water) 4 weeks later

Q

How are cooling aids used pre events

A

Cooling aids are used pre events in form of Ice vest and cold towel wraps

17
Q

Benefits of pre event cooling aids

A

Benefits include
Reduce CV drift
Reduce core temperature
Decrease thermal strain (tiredness brought on by excessive heat)

18
Q

Benefits of cooling aids with injury and what do they come in

A

Cooling aids come in ice packs and sprays
Benefits include
Reduced inflammatory response (less swelling)
PRICE method

19
Q

Benefits of cooling aids post event and how are they used

A

Cooling aids are used through ice baths and cryotherapy (super cold air temperatures for 2-3mins)
Reduce DOMS
Reduce swelling
Increases speed of lactate removal (vasoconstrict blood vessels, causing oxygenated blood to flow and remove lactic acid quicker)

20
Q

Negatives of cooling aids post event

A
Negatives of cooling aids post event include
Ice burns/tissue damage
Can lead to overexertion
Mask injuries
Dangerous for those with angina
