Measuring Strength Flashcards
How do you measure maximal strength with dynamometer and what is protocol
You can measure maximal strength by using a hand grip dynamometer, participant turns dial to 0 and holds dynamometer with a straight arm above head. Arm is brought down as they squeeze grip maximally. 3 attempts are recorded from dominant and non dominant hand with results compared to standardised comparison tables.
How do you measure elastic/explosive test
You can measure elastic/ explosive strength by vertical jump test
Performer marks highest point reached with chalked hand, difference in resting and jumping height represent sexplosive strength and is assessed using standardised comparison table
How to measure strength endurance with abdominal condition test
Measure endurance strength with abdominal conditioning test by
Subject performs sit ups at progressive intensities until exhaustion. Each sit up is timed to an audio cue. Test is over when subject cannot complete 2 consecutive sit ups in allotted time or when technique deteriorate. Stage and sit up number achieved indicates strength endurance compared to standardised data.
What are adv and dis adv for hand grip dynamometer
Adv Simple and objective Inexpensive High reliability Dis adv Not sport specific Only tests forearm muscles
What is protocol for 1RM test
Protocol is subject chooses a high weight achievable in 1 rep on a specific piece of gym equipment/free weight to assess isolated muscles max strength. Increase weight until only 1 maximal rep is achieved, ensure full recovery between reps to prevent fatigue.
Adv and dis adv of 1RM test
Adv Direct, objective measurement Easy procedure, accessible equipment Most muscle groups can be tested Dis adv Difficult to isolate individual muscles Trial and error can cause fatigue Good technique is essential Potential injury risk
Adv and dis adv of abdominal conditioning test
Adv Large groups can perform at same time Simple and cheap equipment Isolated abdominals Valid and reliable Dis adv Good technique is essential Risk of lower back injury Maximal test (relies on motivation) Not sport specific
Adv and dis adv of vertical jump test
Adv
Data can be converted into power output estimation
Simple test minimal equipment
Can be self administered
Dis adv
Not isolated to one muscle group
Only estimates explosive strength of legs
