Vivaldi Harmony & Tonality Flashcards
1
Q
What is the tonic key of the piece?
A
The tonic (home key) is D minor and most of the music remains in this key.
2
Q
The music modulates to closely related keys. Explain what this means.
A
'Modulate' means change key (scale). A 'related key' is one that contains similar notes to the scale of the tonic key, with maybe just 1 or 2 different ones. In the concerto Vivaldi modulates to keys such as G minor (subdominant) and A minor (dominant).
3
Q
In the third movement the music modulates to the more remote key of F minor. What does this mean?
A
A remote key is one that has a considerable amount of different notes in its scale compared to the tonic key. The tonic D minor (DEFGABbC#D) compared to F minor (FGAbBbCDbEbF).
4
Q
The concerto uses ‘functional tonality’. What does this mean?
A
Where key relationships are built on a
carefully controlled process of using related keys.
