Where was Clara (Wieck) Schumann born and where did she die?
Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1819 and died in Frankfurt in 1896.
Why was it difficult for Schumann to establish herself as a composer in the nineteenth century?
Despite the success of several 19th-century female novelists around Europe, female composers, during Clara’s lifetime (and beyond), were neither expected nor encouraged!
What was Schumann best known for musically during her lifetime?
Being a concert pianist - something that will influenced the quality of this ‘piano trio’. She performed all over Europe, encouraged by her father who was a gifted piano teacher.
Which famous male composer did Clara marry?
Robert Schumann. He was a piano student of Clara’s father (Friedrich). Her father was against the match. They married in 1840.
How prolific was Clara as a composer?
She wrote a concerto as young as 15! She continued to compose into early middle age, but family responsibilities then reduced this - she gave birth to 8 children!!!
Why was Clara the ‘bread winner’ int he household?
Robert made little money from his composing and suffered from mental illness, with the final years of his life spent in an asylum.
Explain Clara’s links with famous composer Johannes Brahms.
They exchanged letters and she championed his music (you can hear a similarity between her music and his, as well as Robert’s). Brahms valued Clara’s critiques of his work, with him sometimes re-writing passages based on her views. Some believe Brahms was in love with Clara.
Who was Joseph Joachim and why was he significant to Clara?
Joachim was a famous 19th century violinist who Clara worked with. She may well have gained guidance from him regarding violin writing.
What types of musical work did Clara write?
Lieder (Romantic song); solo piano pieces; choral pieces; ‘Romances’ for violin and piano. A number of her pieces were published and received positive reviews.
