Saariaho Texture Flashcards
What is monophonic texture?
This means a single layer of music - literally only one note happens at a time (there is no harmonic content).
Does Saariaho use a monophonic texture?
Yes, although sometimes it does not sound conventionally monophonic due to the various techniques taking place, such as: reverb, increased bow pressure; harmoniser etc. See Bars 1-3 and 4-7.
What is a two part texture?
When there are 2 layers happening at the same time in the music.
Does Saariaho use 2 part texture?
Yes! An example can be seen in ‘bar’ 9, where notes are played with harmonics.
What is a pedal note?
A repeated or held note lower in the texture that accompanies other content int he piece?
Where does Saariaho use pedal notes?
She uses a pizzicato low C in stave 18. She uses a held low D in stave 13.
What is a drone?
Similar to a pedal note, but less likely to occur in conventional classical music, as a drone will typically go on for longer, not necessarily be harmonically resolved.
Where does Saariaho use drones?
Similar to pedal notes really.Stave 8 to 9 the D in the bass clef lower staff.
