What is monophonic texture?

A

This means a single layer of music - literally only one note happens at a time (there is no harmonic content).

Does Saariaho use a monophonic texture?

A

Yes, although sometimes it does not sound conventionally monophonic due to the various techniques taking place, such as: reverb, increased bow pressure; harmoniser etc. See Bars 1-3 and 4-7.

What is a drone?

A

Similar to a pedal note, but less likely to occur in conventional classical music, as a drone will typically go on for longer, not necessarily be harmonically resolved.
