Berlioz - Texture Flashcards
How might you describe the use of texture generally in the piece?
Highly varied throughout, with frequent changes.
Why do you think Berlioz varies the texture so much?
To express the constant changes of mood of the character in the programme (story).
Why is the use of woodwind so imaginative in the symphony?
They are given much independence, e.g. they are the only section to play at the very beginning.
What is a homophonic texture?
Melody and accompaniment.
Does Berlioz use a monophonic texture at all?
Yes - e.g. bar 7 or bar 505.
What is unison writing?
When 2 or more instruments play the same melodic layer. This occurs in the symphony at bar 72.
What is the interval of an octave?
When instruments play the same note letter but are 8 notes apart. This happens in the symphony at bar 166 in the lower pitched strings.
What is melodic/musical dialogue?
This is when the melody is exchanged between instruments, as if they are having a conversation.
