Vitamins Flashcards
Organic substances required by animals in very small amounts for regulating various body processes to maintain normal health, growth, production and reproduction
VITAMINS
Classified as fat soluble and water soluble
VITAMINS
Fat Soluble Vitamins
- VITAMIN A
- VITAMIN D
- VITAMIN E
- VITAMIN K
- Better known as retinol
- Precursor: Beta Carotene which is found in plants
- Function: Essential for health of epithelial cells, eyesight
VITAMIN A
- Also known as cholecalciferol
- from plants and is better known as ergocalciferol
- Precursor: 7-dehydrocholesterol that is activated by ultraviolet light
- Functions: Encourages absorption of calcium in the intestines and in calcium and phosphorus metabolism
VITAMIN D
- Also known as tocopherol
- Utilization of this vitamin is dependent on the adequacy of the mineral selenium
- Function: Anti-oxidant, Metabolic regulator of the cell nucleus
VITAMIN E
- Also known as menadion which is Vitamin K3
- Vitamin K2 is known as phytomenadion
- Function: Essential for prothrombin formation and blood utility
VITAMIN K
Water Soluble Vitamins
- VITAMIN B-COMPLEX
2. VITAMIN C
Vitamin B-Complex Vitamins
- VITAMIN B1 (THIAMINE)
- VITAMIN B2 (RIBOFLAVIN)
- NIACINE
- VITAMIN B6 (PYRIDOXINE)
- PANTOTHENIC ACID
- BIOTIN
- CHOLINE
- FOLIC ACID
- VITAMIN B12 (CYANOCOBALAMIN)
- INOSITOL
- PARA-AMINOBENZOIC ACID
- Also known as thiamine
- Function: A coenzyme in energy metabolism
VITAMIN B1
- Also known as Riboflavin and Vitamin G
- Function: Present in several enzyme systems related to energy and protein metabolism
VITAMIN B2
Found in enzyme system related to carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism; and tissue respiration
NIACIN
- Also known as pyridoxine
- Functions: Coenzyme in amino acid metabolism, essential fatty acid metabolism, and in antibody production
VITAMIN B6
Part of coenzyme A present in other metabolic reactions
PANTOTHENIC ACID
Present in enzyme systems related to carbon dioxide fixation and decarboxylation and in fat synthesis
BIOTIN
- In transmethylation, fat metabolism in the liver and in cell structure
- Not a true vitamin function
CHOLINE
- Also known as Folacin
- Functions in the transfer of single carbon units in various biochemical reactions
FOLIC ACID
- Also known as cyanocobalamin
- Act as coenzyme in several biochemical reactions especially involved in propionic acid metabolism and in erythrocyte or red blood cell (RBC) maturation
- Cobalt, a mineral, is essential for its synthesis
VITAMIN B12
Not fully understood, but possibly act as replacement of certain vitamins in short supply
INOSITOL
- Essential for growth of certain micoorganisms
- May function in rumen and intestinal synthesis of other vitamins
PARA-AMINOBENZOIC ACID
- Better known as Ascorbic Acid
- Other name: Antiscorbutic Factor
- Function: In reactions related to the formation and maintenance of collagenous intracellular material
VITAMIN C
