Goat and Sheep Housing Flashcards
1
Q
Production Systems in Goat & Sheep Housing
A
- TETHERING
- EXTENSIVE PRODUCTION
- INTENSIVE PRODUCTION
2
Q
Widely used method of goat raising in Asia and in the Philippines
A
TETHERING
3
Q
- Goats are tied each to a rope 6-10m long
- The animal is transferred once or twice a day everyday where they can have free access to fresh forage
- Very little or no concentrates, salt or mineral licks provided
- Helps in controlling intestinal worm infection
A
TETHERING
4
Q
Disadvantage of Tethering
A
You have to monitor the animal to prevent crop damage
5
Q
- Goats are usually kept in herd of 5-10 animals
- The herd is allowed to browse/graze on natural vegetation and hedges
- The ability of goats to return on their own in the afternoon helps ease management
- Cutting the leaves of ipil-ipil, cassava, kamachile, jackfruit and hibiscus/gumamela for feeding the goats
- Stall feeding is also practiced, rice straw and cut grass are provided and served in the shelter
- No forage conservation or ensiling is practiced
A
ESTENSIVE PRODUCTION
6
Q
- Complete confinement of the animals is being deployed
- The farmer has to cultivate forage
- Employs the cut-and-carry method
- The forage is mixed with grasses, legumes and tree leaves
- Supplementing of concentrates would depend on the kind of forage available
- In the Philippines, molasses is added since rice straws are abundant
A
INTENSIVE PRODUCTION
7
Q
Country where goats are allowed to graze on vegetable plots after harvest to rid of the field of vegetable rejects or the stubbles between rice harvest
A
PHILIPPINES
8
Q
Advantages of Intensive Production
A
- EFFICIENT CONVERSION OF CROP RESIDUES
- EFFECTIVE CONTROL OF PARASITE
- MINIMAL DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT SINCE THE ANIMALS ARE CONTROLLED
