Vision Flashcards
What does the cornea do?
Gathers and filters incoming light
What does the iris do?
Controls size of pupil. Colored part of the eye. Divides the front of the eye into anterior and posterior chamber. It contains 2 muscles, the dilator and the constrictor pupillae
What do the lens do?
Refracts incoming light to focus it on the retina
What produces the aqueous humor and where does it drain.
Produced by the ciliary body. Nourishes the eye and gives the eye its shape. Drains through the canal of schlemm
Which structure contains rhodopsin?
Rods
What do rods detect?
Light and dark
Where are rods and cones located?
Retina
cones located in the fovea
Describe the optic pathway from the retina
rods/cones –> bipolar cells –> ganglion cells –> optic nerve
Define retinal disparity
Space between eyes; allows for binocular vision and depth
Define the roles of horizontal and amacrine cells
Integrates signals from ganglion cells and performs edge sharpening
Where is the sclera and choroid located?
Outside of the eye
Describe parallel processing.
Color, form, motion at the same time
Magnocellular cells detect..
Motion. high temporal resolution
Parvocellular cells detect…
Shape, high spatial resolution
