Object Recognition Flashcards
Define top-down processing. Give an example.
The recognition of an object by memories and expectations. Little attention to detail. Ex. Being able to quickly identify something based on background knowledge. For example I see a sand and the ocean, I immediately know that I am at the beach based on my past experiences going to the beach, I know what a beach looks like.
Define bottom up processing. Give an example.
Bottom up processing are details that make up the whole. Recognition of objects by feature detection not influenced by background knowledge. For example, I go into an airplane, I don’t know how anything works but I start playing around with the gears to figure it out.
