Define top-down processing. Give an example.

A

The recognition of an object by memories and expectations. Little attention to detail. Ex. Being able to quickly identify something based on background knowledge. For example I see a sand and the ocean, I immediately know that I am at the beach based on my past experiences going to the beach, I know what a beach looks like.

Define bottom up processing. Give an example.

A

Bottom up processing are details that make up the whole. Recognition of objects by feature detection not influenced by background knowledge. For example, I go into an airplane, I don’t know how anything works but I start playing around with the gears to figure it out.
