Define social facilitation, give an example
Describes the tendency of people to perform at a
different level when others are around.
Example: It might be easier for me to solve a simple puzzle in front of others
Deindividuation
A loss of self-awareness in large groups.
Bystander Effect:
When in a group, individuals are less likely to respond
to a person in need.
Peer Pressure
The social influence placed on individuals by others
they consider equals
Social Loafing give an example
: An individual does not pull his or her weight in a group
setting.
Example: Everyone helping to lift a couch so you don’t help as much because you assume everyone else is helping but you not helping actually makes the couch heavier for others.
Define group polarization
The tendency toward making decisions in a group that
are more extreme.
Define groupthink and how to lower the effects of groupthink.
The tendency for groups to make decisions based on
ideas and solutions that arise within the group without
considering outside ideas.
Ex. Adding an outsider to the group with new ideas
Culture
The beliefs, ideas, behaviors, actions, and
characteristics of a group or society.
Define assimilation
The process by which an immigrant or minority takes
up elements of mainstream culture. Assimilation is a
specific type of socialization. To experience
assimilation, a person must first have their own
culture, then absorb elements of a new culture.
Define multiculturalism
The encouragement of multiple cultures within a
community to enhance diversity.
Define subculture and give example
A group of people within a culture that distinguish
themselves from the primary culture.
Ex. Catholics are a branch of christianity
Counterculture and example
A group whose members adopt cultural patterns in opposition to the larger culture and tend to acquire cultural messages from sources that are less mainstream than mass media
Example: Hippies, punks
