Memory Flashcards
Define encoding. What is stronger semantic encoding, acoustic, or visual encoding.
: The process of putting new info into memory. It can be
automatic or effortful. Semantic encoding is stronger than
both acoustic and visual encoding.
Categories human memory
Sensory memory ( Seconds)
Short term memory ( mins)
Long term memory ( lifetime memory)
- Explicit -→ Declarative -→ Episodic -→ Semantic
- Implicit –→ Procedural memory
What are semantic networks?
Stores facts. Concepts are linked together based on similar meaning. Certain triggers will activate associated memories.
What is retrieval?
: Recognition of info is stronger than recall. Retrieval is often based on priming interconnected nodes of the semantic network.
Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disorder associated with the loss of which neurotransmitter?
Acetylcholine in neurons that link to the hippocampus
What is Korakoff’s syndrome?
Memory loss caused by thiamine deficiency. Causes retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. Another symptom is confabulation, the fabrication of vivid but fake memories
What is agnosia?
Characterized by the loss of ability to recognize objects, people, or sounds. Usually caused by physical damage to the brain.
What is retrograde interference.
New memories makes you forget old memories
What is proactive interference?
Old memories interfere with learning new memories
