Viral Diseases Flashcards
What are viral diseases and why are they so hard to treat?
Viral diseases are diseases spread by viruses. They are harder to treat as they start suddenly and because viruses live and reproduce within cells, so it’s hard to destroy the virus without destroying the cell it is within.
What are measles?
Measles is a viral infection, the main symptoms are fever and red skin rash. It is highly infectious and spread by the inhalation of droplets. It can cause blindness, brain damage and death. There is no treatment so the infected must be isolated.
What is HIV/AIDS
HIV is a virus that can eventually lead to AIDS. HIV causes a mild, flu like illness to begin that slowly whittles down the immune system, until the patient develops AIDS. HIV is spread by sexual contact and the exchange of body fluids, and there is no cure or vaccine. It can be prevented through use of condoms and preventing fluid exchange.
What is the tobacco mosaic virus?
TMV is a virus that effects plants. It causes a distinctive, mosaic-like pattern of discolouration along the leaves as it destroys cells. This prevents photosynthesis and weakens the plant. Insects act as vectors for the virus, and it can be spread through contact with diseased plant material. There is no treatment, but resistant strains of crop can be grown.
