Plant Diseases Flashcards
Why are plants so vulnerable to pathogens?
Plants are not only attacked internally by pathogens but externally by pests.
What are aphids?
Aphids are a species of pest with sharp mouths. They use these to penetrate the phloem vessels and feed on the sap, and depriving the plant of the products of photosynthesis.
How can pests be destroyed?
Pests can be destroyed using chemical pesticides, or in enclosed spaces biological pest control, such as ladybirds to deal with aphids.
What is mineral deficiency?
Mineral deficiency is when plants don’t get the minerals they need from the soil. For example, if they lack magnesium ions they can’t make the chlorophyll they need for photosynthesis.
What are some clear signs of disease in plants?
Stunted growth Spots on leaves Areas of rotting Growths Malformations Discolouration Visible pests
