Non-Communicable Diseases Flashcards
What is a Non-Communicable Disease?
Non-Communicable Diseases are diseases that can’t be spread from host to host and are caused by the organism’s genetic make up, lifestyle or environment.
What are some risk factors for Non-Communicable Diseases
Lifestyle factors (Such as diet, obesity, fitness levels, smoking, drinking alcohol) and environmental factors (Ionising radiation, UV light, tobacco smoke and carcinogens/cancerous effectors)
What is a correlation?
Similarities between two disconnected factors (eg: skin cancer rates and ice cream sales) will have a correlation. Whilst not directly connected, they may share a relationship, aka a Correlation
What is a causal mechanism?
A causal mechanism explains how one factor influences another through a biological process. For example, there is a link between smoking tobacco and lung cancer in that although anyone can get lung cancer smoking tobacco increases the risk.
