Diet, Exercise & Disease Flashcards
What happens when you eat more food than necessary?
Excess is stored as fat. You need some fat to cushion internal organs and to act as an energy store. An excess of fat however will make you overweight and ultimately obese. This causes inconvenience and discomfort, as well as potentially serious health issues.
What health issues may be caused by diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease
what are the results of exercise?
Energy is transferred from the food you eat to your muscles to work them. People who exercise regularly have bigger muscles that need more energy to be transferred from food than body fat.
They’re much fitter and have healthier hearts and bigger lungs.
They are also less likely to develop cardiovascular diseases or from other health problems such as type 2 diabetes.
Why does exercise keep you healthy?
You have more muscles tissue, increasing your metabolic rate.
You are less likely to be overweight and thus less likely to develop arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Your heart will be fitter and develop a better blood supply by lowering your blood cholesterol levels and balances the different types of cholesterol, reducing the risk of build up.
What is type 2 obesity?
Type 2 obesity is when your body doesn’t make enough insulin to control blood sugar levels or your cells stop responding to insulin.
This can lead to problems with circulation, kidney function, and eyesight, and eventually death.
Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for the disease and it can be combatted by eating a balanced diet and exercising.
