Cell transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading of gas particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration to achieve equilibrium.
How do you calculate the movement speed of diffusing particles?
particles moving in - particles moving out = net movement
What are partially permeable membranes?
Membranes that only let some types of particles in or out
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of fluids across a membrane from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution.
What does it mean when a solution is isotonic to a cell?
The concentration of solutes outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration.
What does it mean when a solution is hypertonic to the cell?
The concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is higher than the internal concentration.
What does it mean when a solution is hypotonic to a cell?
The concentration of solutes in outside the cell is lower than the internal concentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of substances against the concentration gradient. It uses energy and allows plant root hairs to absorb mineral ions
What is surface area to volume ratio?
The ratio of surface area to volume falls as an object gets bigger. The larger the SA:V ratio the shorter the diffusion distances.
