Vertebral Column, Ribs and Sternum (Axial) Flashcards
How many cervical vertebrae, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae are there?
7 C.V., 12 T.v. and 5 L.v
When you see process in the naming of a bone what do you look for?
Process would mean something that protrudes
What is the nucleus pulposus?
Centre of the vertebrae = for shock absorption
What is the outer parts of the disc in between vertebrae called?
Annulus fibrosus => made of fibrocartilage
What is the arrow pointing to?
Spinous process
Protrudes out from the back; can feel it when you touch the spine
What makes up the vertebral arch
Transverse, spinous and superior+inferior processes
What is the arrow pointing to?
Spinal cord
Goes through the vertebral foramen
What is the arrow pointing to?
Vertebral foramen
The spinal cord goes through here; bones stacked on each other make vertebral canal - foramen means “hole”
What is the arrow pointing to?
Facet of Superior articular process
What is the arrow pointing to?
Vertebral Body
What is the pedicle?
Connects the vertebral body to the transverse processs
What is lamina in the vertebrae?
Connects spinous to transverse process
It means layer or plate
What is the arrow pointing to?
Transverse process
What is the arrow pointing to?
Inferior articular process
Connects the vertebrae to the inferior articular process of the vertebrae above
What is the arrow pointing to?
Superior articular process
Connects vertebrae to the superior process of the vertebrae of the vertebrae below
What are costal facets?
Found on the transverse process (thoracic vertebrae) and used to attach to tubercle of rib
Costal facets only in thoracic; ribs only connect to thoracic spine
What type of vertebrae is the first column of images
Cervical vertebrae
Bifid spinous process (split into two); holes in cervical called transverse foramen (none of the other vertebrae have them) where arteries go through
What type of vertebrae is the second column of images
Thoracic vertebrae
Has costal facets; looks like a giraffe from a lateral view; has a transverse process and articular processes - superior view you can see three parts sticking out
***Spinous process most inferior
What type of vertebrae is the third column of images
Lumbar vertebrae
Has no bifid process or transverse foramen like cerv., or costal facets like thoracic - superior view you can see five parts sticking out
Which vertebrae are exceptionalities to how they look?
C1, C2 and C7
In the image of C1 how is it different from normal cervical vertebrae?
No bifid spinous process; no vertebral body
Lateral mass attaches to occiptal condyle of occiptal bone
