Cartilage in the Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the three types of cartilage in the skeleton?
Hyaline, Elastic, Fibrocartilage
What are the three types of cartilage used for?
Resisting compression in joints for example
What does Hyaline cartilage do?
Support with flexibility and resilience
How abudant is hyaline cartilage?
Most abundant of the skeletal cartilages
Where can hyaline cartilage be found?
Articular cartilage, respiratory system and costal ribs
In this image of the lungs and the tubes which structures would contain hyaline cartilage?
Larynx, Bronchioles, Trachea
How is elastic cartilage different from the other two types?
More elastic fibres
What is elastic cartilage best suited for?
Repeated bending
Epiglottis and elastic cartilage?
Bends down every time food goes down our throat to block it from getting into the airway
What is fibrocartilage great for?
Tensile strength; withstanding pressure and stretch
Where would you find fibrocartilage in the body?
Meniscus of the knee, intervertebral discs
What cartilage specifically makes up most of fetal skeleton?
Hyaline cartilage
What is ossification? When does it start?
When cartilage turns into bone; 8 weeks as a fetus
What are some differences from the two pictures from 10 weeks in the fetus to birth?
A lot of the cartilage while in the fetus but when born there is mostly bone.
Why is the epiphyseal plate made of cartilage cells and not bone?
Cartilage cells can quickly grow and divide much faster
