Ventilation Flashcards
What type of epithelium is present in the trachea
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Where does bifurcation of the trachea occurs
At the carina
If a foreign body falls down the trachea, which bronchus is it most likely to fall down
The right - it is steeper and less protected by the carina
Bronchial wall epithelium
Pseudostratifiied epithelium
Bronchioles
Simple epithelium
Adaptations of alveoli
Thin walled, capillaries contain collagen and elastic
Which lung is larger
Right lung as it has 3 lobes compared to left which has 2
What is the cardiac notch
It allows space for the heart - feature on the left lung
What is the parietal pleura
Pleura outside - attached to the chest wall
What is the visceral pleura
Pleura inside - attached to the lung
What are the muscles of respiration
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles
Process of inhalation
External intercostal muscle contract
Ribs are raised and the chest moves forwards
Diaphragm muscles contract - move in and down
Thoracic cavity expands
Air is rushed into lungs
Process of exhalation
External intercostal muscle relaxed
Diaphragm is relaxed and moves out and up
Air is rushed out of lungs
