Lymph nodes and function Flashcards
Division of lymph nodes
Superficial ring and vertical group of deep lymph nodes
Where do superficial lymph nodes receive lymph from
Scalp, face and neck
Arranged in a ring shape
Drain into the deep lymph nodes
Occipital lymph nodes
Located in the back of the head
Collect lymph from the occipital area of the scalp
Post auricular lymph nodes
Posterior to ear
Collect lymph posterior neck, upper ear and back of the EAM
Pre auricular lymph nodes
Anterior to the auricle of the ear
Collect lymph from the superficial areas of the face and temporal region
Parotid lymph nodes
Located superficially to the parotid gland
Collect lymph from the nose, nasal cavity, EAM, tympanic cavity and the lateral borders of the orbit
Submental lymph nodes
Located superficially to the mylohyoid
Collect lymph from the central lower lip, floor of the mouth and the apex of the tongue
Submandibular lymph nodes
Located below the mandible in the submandibular triangle
Collect lymph from cheeks, lateral aspects of the nose, upper lip, lateral parts of the lower lip, gums and the anterior tongue
Receive lymph from the submittal and facial lymph nodes
Facial lymph nodes
Maxillary/ infraorbital, buccinator and supramandibular lymph nodes
Collect lymph from the mucous membranes of the nose and cheek, eyelids and conjunctiva
Superficial cervical lymph nodes
Can be divided into superficial anterior cervical nodes and the lateral superficial cervical lymph nodes
What are deep lymph nodes also known as
Cervical lymph nodes
Organised into a vertical chain, located within close proximity to the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath
What is Waldeyer’s ring
Lymphatic tissue surrounding the superior pharynx
Lymphatic tissue responds to pathogens that may be ingested or inhaled
What tonsils make up Waldeyer’s ring
Lingual tonsil
Palatine tonsil
Tubal tonsil
Pharyngeal tonsil
Where do the deep cervical nodes extend from
The base of the skull to the clavicle
Grouped into superior, middle and inferior groups
Superior deep cervical group
Drain the soft palate, tonsils, palatoglossal/ pharyngeal arches, posterior aspect and base of the tongue, pyriform fossa and the larynx above the vocal folds
Drains superficial nodes of the face and scalp
Drains the upper retropharyngeal nodes
