Venous and lymphatic drainage of the upper limb Flashcards
What are the two classes of veins?
Deep and superficial
What are the superficial of importeance
Basilic- originates from dorsal venous network of the hand. Ascends medially and moves deep into the arm at teres minor.
Cephalic- Arises from dorsal venous network of the hand, travels laterally and moves into the axilla at the clavipectoral triangle
both veins drain into the axillary vein
Median cubital vein- connects the two
How are deep veins arranged
Lie either side of major arteries. Perforating veins lie between the deep adn superficial veins of the upper limb connecting the two systems
What does the lymphatic system do?
What are the major lymph groups that surround the clavicle
Drains tissue fluid, pasma proteins and other cellular debris back into the blood stream.
Pectoral Subscapular Humeral Central Apical
Describe the
Pectoral lymph nodes
Subscapualr lymph nodes
Humeral lymph nodes
Pectoral- 3-5 nodes located in the medial wall of the axilla. Receive from most of the breast
Subscapualr- 6-7 nodes located along posterior axillary fold. receive drainage from posterior thoracic wall and subscapular region
Humeral- located in lateral wall of axilla, recieve majority of lymph from upper limb
Describe the central lymph node
Describe the apical lymph node
Located near base of axilla, receive lymph via efferent vessels from pectoral, subscapular and humeral axillary node groups
Located in apex of axilla, recieve lymoh from othe nodes and from cephalic vein
