The ulna Flashcards

1
Q

What is the ulna?

Where does it articulate?

A

Smaller of the two long bones in the forearm. Acts as the stabilising bone with the radius pivoting to reduce movement.

Articulates with humerus at elbow joint and distally the ulnar articulates with the radius

Q

What are the five important landmarks of the ulna

A

Olecranon- Large projection of bone that extends proximally. Triceps brachii attaches to its superior
surface.
Coronoid process- ridge of bone projects outwards anteriorly forming trochlear notch
Trochlear notch- articulates with troachlear of humerus.
Radial notch- articualtes with head of radius
Ulna tubersoity- immediately distal to coronoid process, brachilais muscle attaches here

Q

Where does the pronator quadratus muscle attach?

What is the name given to the membrane that spans between the radius and the ulna

What occurs at the termination of the ulna?

A

Anterior border of ulna shaft

Intraosseous membrane

The ulnar styloid process

Q

What are the four main fractures that occur at the ulna?

A

Shaft fracture- result of trauma

Olecranon prcoess- falling on a flexed elbow

Montegggia’s fracture- force from behind ulna dislocates proximal haft and head of radius at elbow

Galeazzi’s fracture- Fracture to distal radius with the ulnar head dislocating at the distal radio-ulnar joint
