The scapula Flashcards
What is the scapula?
The shoulder blade- articulating with humerus and clavicle it connects the upper limb to the trunk. It also acts as an attachment point.
What is the large concave depression on the costal region of the scapula?
What muscle originates from this region?
Subscapular fossa
Subscapularis (rotator cuff muscle) originates from here
What bony prominence lies just underneath the clavicle
What muscles attach/originate here
Coracoid process
Pec minor- attaches
Coracobrachialis and biceps brachi (short head)-originate
Where does the lateral surface of the scapula face?
Humerus
What fossa lies in the middle of the lateral surface of the scapula?
What is its job?
Glenoid fossa- articulates with the head of the humerus to form the glenohumeral joint (shoulder joint).
What tuberccle lies immediately above the glenoid fossa?
What is its job?
Supraglenoid tubercle- Place of attachment for the long head of biceps brachii
What tubercle lies immediately posterior to the glenoid fossa?
What is its job?
Infraglenoid tubercle- attachment of the long head of triceps brachii
What two fossa lie on either side of the scapulas spine?
What are their jobs?
Supraspinous fossa- the area above the spine of the
scapula. Supraspinatus originates from here.
Infraspinatous fossa- Area below spine of scapula, infraspinatous originates from here.
What are the two articulations of the scapula?
Glenohumeraljoint- lies between glenoid fossa of the scapula and the head of the humerus
Acromioclavicular joint- between the acromion of the scapula and the clavicle
What causes winging of the scapula?
The serratus anterior muscle originates from ribs 1-8 and attaches to the costal face of the scapula, pulling it to the rib cage If the long thoracic nerve is damaged then the scapula will protrude out of the back with the arm.
