Anatomical snuffbox Flashcards
What is the anatomical snuffbox?
Triangular depression found on the dorsum of the hand. It is located level with the carpal bones, best seen when the thumb is extended.
What are the borders of the snuffbox
Ulnar (medial border): tendon of extensor pollicus longus
Radial (lateral boder) :tendons of abductor pollicus longus and extensor pollicus brevis.
Proximal border: styloid process of the radius
Base: Carpal bones: scaphoid and trapezius
Roof: Skin
What are the contents of the snuffbox
Radial artery- travels between abductor pollicus muscles
Superficial branch of radial nerve
Cephalic vein:arises from the dorsal venous network of the hand. Crosses the anatomical snuffbox and travels up the anterolateral aspect of the arm
Why is the snuffbox relevant?
Falling on an outstretched hand can cause a scaphoid fracture. This may lead to avascular necrosis and future athritis for the patient.
