Clavicle Flashcards
What is the clavicle?
What is its main jobs?
Collar bone- s shaped bone that extends between the sternum and the scapula
Attaches upper limb to trunk as part of shoulder gurdle
Protects underlying neurovascular structures
Transmits force from the upper limb to the axial skeleton
What are the three divisions of the clavicle?
Sternal end
Shaft
Acromial end
What two important landmarks occur at the sternal end?
Large facet- articualtes bone with sternum
Rough oval depression- on the inferior surface for the costoclavicular ligament. A ligament involved in the Sternoclavicular joint
What is the job of the shaft of the clavicle
Acts as a point of origin and attachment for several muscles (deltoid, trapezius, subclavius, pectoralis major, sternocleidomastoid and sternohyoid)
What three landmarks occur at the acromial end of the clavicle?
Facet- articuates with the acromion of the scapula forming the acromioclavicular joint
Conoid tubercle- attachment point of the conoid ligament
Trapezoid line- attachment point of the trapezoid ligament
What occurs during a fracture of the clavicle?
Commonly seen during a fall on the shoulder or onto an outstretched hand. 80% of fractures occur in the middle third. The lateral end is displaced by the arm.
