Muscles in the anterior compartment of the forearm Flashcards
Where do the muscles of the superficial anterior compartment originate from
What one action do they mostly carry out?
The medial epicondyle of the humerus, they all share a common tendon.
Flexion
What is flexor carpi ulnaris?
What innervates it?
Superficial muscle of the anterior forearm
Ulnar nerve
What are the attachments of flexor carpi ulnaris?
What is its fucntion?
originates from the medial epicondyle with the other superficial flexors. Also has a long origin from the ulna.Passes into the wrist and attaches to the psiform carpal bone
Flexes and adducts the wrist
What is palmaris longus?
What innervates it?
Superficial muscle of the anterior forearm, lost of 15% of people
The median nerve
What are the attachments of palmaris longus?
What are its functions?
Originates from the medial epicondyle attaches to flexor retinaculum at the wrist.
Flexion at the wrist
What is the flexor carpi radialis?
What innervates it?
superficial muscle of the anterior forarm
Median nerve
What are the attachments of flexor carpi radialis?
What are its functions
Originates from the medial epicondyle attaches to base of metacarpals II and III.
Flexion and abduction of the wrist
What is pronator teres?
What innervate it?
Superficial muscel of the anterior forearm
Median nerve
What are the attachments of the pronator teres?
What are its functions
Two origins one from medial epicondyle, other from coronoid process of the ulna. Attaches top the mid shaft of the radius
What is the flexor digitorum superficialis?
Why is this a good anatomical landmark of the forearm?
What innervates it?
Intermediate muscle of the anterior forearm.
The median nerve and ulnar artery pass between its two heads.
Median nerve
What are the attachments of the flexor digitorum superficialis
What are its functions?
It has two heads, one originates from medial epicondyle other from the radius. Muscle splits into four tendons at the wrist which travel through the carpal tunnel and attach to the middle phalanges
Flexes the metacarpophalengeal joints and proximal proximal interphalengeal joints. Also flexes the wrist
What is flexor digitorum profundus?
What innervates it?
Deep muscle of the anterior forearm.
Medial half- ulnar nerve
Lateral half- anterior interosseous branch of radial nerve
What are the attachments of flexor digitorum profundus?
What are its actions?
Originates from the ulna and associated interosseous membrane. At the wrist it splits into four tendons, pass through carpal tunnel and attach to the distal phalanges of the four fingers
Flexes distal interphalangeal muscles of the wrist. Also flexes metacarpophalyngeal joints at the wrist.
What is flexor pollicus longus
What innervates it?
Deep muscle of the anterior forearm, lies laterally to FDP
Median nerve (anterior interosseous branch)
What are the attachments of flexor pollicus longus
What are its functions
Originates from anterior surface of the radius and surrounding interossous membrane. Attaches to the base of the distal phalanx of the thumb
Flexes interphalangeal joint and metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
