What is a value?
the ideals and customs of a society that ppl ID with. explains why we do what we do, so what motivates us to act. values determine the decisions we make. the practical pursuit and application of ideals by ppl
What is a core value?
first tier of values, so the ones that are the most nb to you that define a person. will lead to action regardless of the circumstance. ie taking the bus despite weather.
What is an intended value?
2nd tier, may be influenced by external variables. core value will always come first if they conflict. ie not taking the bus in the cold bc its not as nb to us.
What is an adopted value?
from pressure to conform to societal or organizational norms. professional values.
What does Somerville argue?
we are searching for community and shared values as a result of our secular democratic society. she reasons this is bc of the impact of intense individualism, globalization, situational ethics approaches, media, overlap in ethics law and science.
What is an ideal?
paradigms of excellence or standards of perfection that ppl seek to achieve. by definition unattainable.
What is a concept?
general statements that ppl in diverse time periods and geographic locations can interpret differently. ie friendship
What is a conception?
the specific interpretation used by ppl. ie multiple conceptions of what friendship is.
