What is Darwalls argument for the kinds of respect?
there is recognition and appraisal respect that are related but different. so ppl have different conceptions of respect.
What is the exclusivity conception of respect?
respect is often status based, so its not always genuine/earned. so it can be used synonymously with authority, so giving your boss respect bc you have to and not bc you genuinely respect them.
What is the difference btwn respecting and accommodating?
respecting someone does not ensure that they are accommodated for. so you could respect someone without accommodating them, you could accommodate them without respecting them, and you could respect them leading to accommodating them.
What is appraisal respect?
respect for another person stemming from an appreciation of their talent or skill. so respecting somebody’s actions, ideas, characteristics, or merits. an attitude of respect towards excellence. you can have a range of how much you respect somebody appraisally.
What is recognition respect?
actions toward others stemming from appreciating them as fellow humans. action oriented and intentional. all or nothing respect, so cant only recognitionally respect someone a little. requires accommodation.
How is recognition or appraisal respect integrated into sport?
respect usually connected to fair play. so respect for others, self, and the game. involves respect as co-players, where others are not treated as enemies.
what are we respecting when we respect?
dignity, autonomy, equality, authority. respect isnt simply following the rules to be rewarded or avoid punishment.
What is the difference btwn equality and equity?
equality is sameness and can be achieved by raising one thing to meet another or lowering one thing to meet another. and equity is fairness or justness.
What is John Rawls theory of justice?
under a theoretical veil of ignorance (where ppl dont know their own circumstances) ppl will make morally acceptable and impartial decisions. so equal right to basic liberties and restricting inequalities.
What are Aristotles ideas of distributed justice?
- equals ought to be treated equally 2. unequals can be treated unequally 3. unequal treatment ought to be in reasonable accordance with the inequality in question
So what is respect?
can function as an ideal and a value. there are diff conceptions of it. recognition respect demands we take action when we see disrespect. respect in sport is strongly connected to conceptions of fair play, equity, and justice.
