What is axiology?
study of values and value judgments including 1. aesthetics - examining beauty and harmony (if we like it) 2. ethics - examining right and good. its ones ability to discriminate at a sensory lvl and the science of how things are known empirically (via the senses). a. the study of the beautiful b. the study of perception c. the study of art
What do aesthetic judgments often involve?
biological ramifications - changing outfits or hairstyles bc dont like it anymore. emotional responses. cultural conditioning - ie beard and soup, why do we find these two things together gross if they arent separately (disagree beards are disgusting). can be influenced by a persons economic political or moral values.
What are the two meanings of ‘aesthetic’?
- evaluative sense: similar to graceful or pleasing, so saying smthn looks aesthetic. 2. conceptual sense: includes both beautiful and ugly
What are some ideas about natural beauty?
rooted in antiquity and ancient thought. the human form was a measure of aesthetic quality, universal elements of beauty; order and symmetry.
What are the ancient thoughts on the body and proportion?
ancient philosophers believed we had a duty to develop our bodies. similar to getting a car tuned up. balance and proportionality considered beautiful. symmetry and balance remain admired in many aesthetic mvmts.
What is a purposive event?
aesthetic element is a contingent property of the contest - winner is determined by measurable outcomes.
What is an aesthetic event?
aesthetic element is a necessary part of deciding the winner - requires judge, cannot distinguish means and ends, some ppl criticize as too subjective.
What are aesthetic sensibilities?
trying to develop the capacity for appreciation, contemplation, enjoyment, and aesthetic judgment of reality. so why do we like smthn. do we value mvmt beyond the health benefits it provides us, and why.
What is the difference btwn a purist and partisan approach?
Purist: appreciation of the game and skills Partisan: loyalty to a team
