AIM
to determine the usefulness of psych educational material provided via group work for offender patients within a high security forensic psychiatric hospital
PROCEDURE
42 male patients were referred for an “understanding mental illness” psycho educational group. semi structured interviews carried out by lead researcher after a group therapy session designed to gain insight into 1) positive and negative aspects 2) what they felt they had gained 3)how it could be improved. the interview schedule used the clinical outcomes in routine evaluation outcome measure (CORE-OM) to asses the effectiveness of psychological therapies. the interview schedule used self report data in the form of the self concept questionnaire (SCQ) and was used to assess self esteem. all interviews were recorded and later transcribed. Number of violent incidents was noted ranging from minor verbal comments to interpersonal violence.
FINDINGS
21 out of 42 patients completed. 4 main themes identified 1)what they valued and why 2) what they found helpful 3) clinical implications 4) what they found difficult/unhelpful. valued knowledge of illness and had increased confidence and positivity.
CONCLUSION
there is a usefulness of psych educational material on offender patients. valued knowledge of illness. highlighted a lack of previous knowledge.
:) qualitative data
qualitative data is good because it allows the researcher to see how effective the patient found the psych educational material. T/F increasing the validity
:) inter rater reliability
all interviews were recorded and stored electronically. T/F the study has inter rater reliability as it can be checked by. other researchers establishing inter rater reliability
:( subjective interpretations
different clinicians may have interpreted what the patient said differently to others T/F reducing the validity of the findings
:( spontaneous questions
although most questions the patients were asked were standardised certain patients received spontaneous questions different to other patients T/F reducing the validity of the study.
