cultural issues with diagnosis Flashcards
The Spiritual Model
if the clinician is from a different cultural background than the patient then certain behaviours may be interpreted as abnormal when they are not. for example Malgady (1987) demonstrated that there is a difference in the interpretation of hearing voices between Costa Rican culture and the USA
language barriers
if the clinician is from a different cultural background than the patient then it may be difficult for the patient to understand what the clinician is saying. T/F potentially leading to an incorrect diagnosis
cultural bound symptoms
these are illnesses with a set of symptoms found and recognised in one culture. for example kuru- an incurable brain disease found in papa New Guinea. T/F if the clinician is not from the same cultural background as the patient with these symptoms then they may not know how to diagnose them .
influence of culture norms and stereotypes
Cooper (1972) examined 250 psychiatric admissions from hospitals in New York and London. He found that the diagnosis of schizophrenia was 8 times more frequent than the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in the New York hospitals however in the London hospitals the ratio of diagnosis of schizophrenia to bipolar disorder was 1:1
