thematic analysis Flashcards
1)
method to analyse a primary source which has generated qualitative data
2)
it is a method which analyses, identifies and reports patterns found in qualitative data known as themes. thus allowing researchers to reduce the data in a flexible way.
3) bottom up approach
this is generally a bottom up approach as the data is sued to form categories/themes in which conclusions can be drawn from. themes are the patterns which emerge from qualitative data and they help to describe the overall data, often in relation to a specific research question.
Braun and Clarke
according to braun and Clarke there are 6 phases of conducting a thematic analysis. 1) becoming familiar with the data. 2) generating initial codes 3) searching for themes 4) reviewing themes 5) defining and naming themes 6) producing the report
:) clinicians use primary data
Clinicians use thematic analysis data on patients they have collected themselves, so it has not been interpreted or manipulated by other clinicians. T/F the data used from patients is a valid source of information on clinical disorders.
:) reduces a large amount of data into a manageable summary
clinicians can generate codes and summarise further into common themes to reflect the overarching findings collected from patients. this makes it easier for meaningful conclusions to be drawn about the patients , their disorder, and the effectiveness of the treatment T/F as themes are carefully considered, the conclusions drawn about the patient can be considered to be valid.
:( often use questionnaires or interviews
use of leading questions- clinicians could have asked the patients leading questions on their symptoms and feelings, thus guiding them to a particular response for example “are you hearing voices” T/F the data and themes gathered about the patients disorder are not valid
:( researcher bias
although evidence is used to generate the theory the clinician selectively picks aspects of the data to focus on and as the theory begins to emerge focuses only on the aspects of the theory they are developing T/F the theory is based on the subjective opinion of the clinician thus reducing the validity of the theory.
